Healthy Biz: Oils of Aloha
June 17th, 2009 by Lori OkamiHow many of you grew up like me… making polished kukui nuts for a lei as a school project and snacking on macadamia nuts? I can’t believe that these have been around for so long and I haven’t fully acquainted myself with the countless benefits of Kukui and Macadamia Oils. I recently had an opportunity to tour the processing plant of Oils of Aloha and now have an even greater appreciation of the product and the company.
Not only do they manufacture superior products, they have also developed a highly efficient process, using the nuts—inside and out. Very little ends up as waste. Yes, even the coarse shell is ground and use as an exfoliant.
Kukui Oil has been proven effective to treat dry skin, burns and even eczema and psoriasis. And they have volumes of testimonials from satisfied customers who have tried everything to relieve their skin problems to no avail until using Kukui Oil. Kukui Oil absorbs quickly into your skin and feels wonderful. It isn’t greasy and doesn’t leave your skin feeling heavy. It’s also hypoallergenic and is even great for kids.
Their Kukui Essential AfterSun product is a must try. It has been tested and proven effective for before sun (to condition your skin) and after sun (to reduce the burn effects). It comes in oil, lotion or cream and can be used in combination with a sunscreen for added UV protection. By the way, they have lip care products too—much needed as we gear up for what has already started to be a record hot summer!
Oils of Aloha is not only about skin care. They produce a delicious variety of Macadamia Oils for cooking and salads. The world over is swept up in the olive oil craze but did you know that Macadamia Oil is actually higher in monounsaturated fat than olive oil? It’s true. (Remember, monounsaturated fats can help reduce bad cholesterol and lower your risk of heart disease and stroke.)
Macadamia Oil is 80% monounsaturated and free from trans-fat and carbs. Oils of Aloha have beautifully packaged oils (great for gift giving too) that are perfect in a barbeque, stir fry or to top a salad. They come in five “flavors” including pure Macadamia oil and others which are infused with chilis, blended with roasted garlic or complimented with Italian herbs. They’ve even done a combination of the chilis and roasted garlic for a delicious zing to meals.
Oils of Aloha ships their oils to seven of the ten largest skin care product manufacturers in the world and spans 27 countries. So you may not even realize it but you could very well be using some of their oils today.
If you are looking for skin care solutions, seek a natural sun care, or want a tasty cooking alternative and like to patronize local agri-business who help strengthen Hawaii’s economy, check out Oils of Aloha. There is a store locator on their site and they offer online ordering with worldwide shipping. Go to: http://www.oilsofaloha.com/.
Mahalo to Matt and Barbara for allowing me to visit and taking the time to walk me through your operation. It was not only informative but eye opening to see full-scale manufacturing thriving in Hawaii.
*** I am conducting a general health survey and invite each of you to participate. Please visit my website www.lifefitnet.com. It is a short 12-question online survey that should take only 2-3 minutes to complete. Mahalo for your support and to everyone who has already provided their feedback, many thanks!

I tried some of the recipes on the http://www.OilsofAloha.com website. The mexi-corn salad is very tasty with macadamia oil infused with Kauai Herbs. I find that because of the high smoke point - a little goes a long way.

Hi Lori, hi everyone, a oil that is over looked that is actually good for your body in many ways is coconut oil. Do your own research on it, simply Google it, "benefits of coconut oil. " I'm not trying to sell coconut oil, I'm just revealing it's contents, and the scientific research behind it. All other oils that are on the market have a under lying problem that most people do not know about. They are, or become rancid very quickly. The majority of the public consume these oils throughout their lives without ever knowing the dangers... I'm sure if you take sometime and read up on coconut oil you will be pleasantly surprised.. Lift for Health...Aloha

I was watching a burger contest on the Food Network. One of the contestants (from Maui, who won btw) used the macadamia oil to make a watercress salad. I was curious to try the mac oil ever since then.

Great article...I think I was like you, growing up with nuts (my siblings wouldn't appreciate it though). Seriously, great info on traditional Hawaiian products. Support local!!! BTW, which was your favorite? Is the lip therapy for "natural dried lips" or is it a "natural" dried lips therapy? Did you try it?

Hey NKHEA!
Thanks. I think I've seen it sold in different sizes which could make it more cost effective. Have you tried the different flavors? Mmmmm. Dressing is great too!
Welcome Ketching!
Great point! Extra-virgin olive oil starts to deteriorate @ 170 degrees. Macadamia oil has a smoke point of 389 degrees so you really get the most out of it (like peanut oil but better). Thanks!
Hi EL LOBO!
I will check out your coconut oil reco. I'm assuming though that you are talking about its benefits for skin rather than consumption--since it is mega high in saturated fats. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hey NeedaHobby!
Email me your address and I'll send you a sample bottle. I happen to have a few. Which one did you want to try?
Hi betterlatethannever!
Yup. Tried it. I like the pineapple but it is so good you're going to want to eat it! I think it's more like natural therapy for dried lips. How's that? I haven't tried the shampoo yet but will and I'll let you know how it is. More to come...
Aloha All!

It's a shame Oils of Aloha wasn't around 25 years ago: you could have used it to oil up for your contests!
From the looks of your guns in the picture here, I think it would still come in handy!

Hey Old Timer! How are you?
Ha, ha. Actually, this absorbs pretty quickly into the skin and might be too light for bodybuilders. We used to mix oils including coconut which was thick and would stay on the skin longer, leaving a somewhat glossy layer. These days... I'd just be happy with skin that doesn't show my age!
Great to hear from you Old Timer!
Aloha,
Lori
